"Zeta Killer" boss arrested in Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta -
A key operative of the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), a powerful organized crime group commonly known as Los Matazetas, or the "Zeta Killers," was arrested in Puerto Vallarta last week, Mexico's federal Organized Crime Strike Force (SEIDO) reported Friday.
Miguel Ángel Pérez Quintero, 34, was taken into custody at a residence in the plush Marina Vallarta development near the city's international airport. Local officials said they were unaware of the planned operation until the house was surrounded by a large contingent of Federal Police agents.
Seven CJNG members were detained with Pérez Quintero, who is said to be the Matazeta "boss of the plaza" in Puerto Vallarta - the person who manages drug trafficking and other criminal activity in the city. Authorities also seized vehicles, weapons and synthetic drugs. The men ranged in age from 27 to 46.
SEIDO's press release said authorities had been looking for Pérez Quintero since April 12, when investigators discovered a ranch under his control in southwestern Jalisco state, where a large quantity of precursor chemicals used in the manufacture of methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs was warehoused. SEIDO alleges Pérez is a major distributor in both Vallarta and Guadalajara.
Three months ago Rubén Oseguera González, the second in command of CJNG, was arrested in Zapopan county, just beyond Guadalajara's city limits. SEIDO reported Friday that Pérez Quintero was Oseguera's chief lieutenant in Jalisco. Federals capture Matazeta boss in suburban Guadalajara.
CJNG also operates in neighboring Michoacán state. Some drug war analysts maintain that CJNG hopes to replace Los Caballeros Templarios in Michoacán, where the latter have suffered significant defeats since January at the hands of federal troops and local citizen militias.
