Mérida police investigate suspicious death in Colonia Miguel Alemán

*Updated Aug. 16*
Mérida, Yucatán -
Colonia Miguel Alemán, a long settled and generally secure neighborhood just minutes from the White City's Grand Plaza, is rarely the scene of serious crime. But late this afternoon metro police announced they were investigating the discovery of a body at this location (Calles 23 x 24), directly across the street from the popular and often crowded Miguel Alemán Park. The area is high traffic, with many small shops, cafes, a grocery store and a heavily attended Catholic church.

Investigators say the victim appears to have fallen from the second story of the Benutti Restaurant (Google street view from June 2012), striking his head on the terraza below. Homicide has not been ruled out, since neighbors reported hearing a fierce argument coming from the premises last night.

The restaurant, its owner and the general location are well known to this reporter - a most unlikely scene for such an event.

Aug. 16 - The victim in this case has been identified as Carlos Francisco Magaña Gutiérrez, age 26, who dined at the restaurant Wednesday evening with a group of friends. Police now say the fall was likely an accident. Magaña Gutiérrez may have been intoxicated, according to the latest reports. He was a former employee of the establishment. The case remains under investigation.
