Death in the Afternoon

"To show his nervousness was not shameful; only to admit it” - Ernest Hemingway, 1932

Aguascalientes, Sunday, April 28, 2013

Aguascalientes, three hours east of Guadalajara, is capital of the central Mexican state of the same name, which could be translated as "Hot Springs." The city is home to over a million people and has been recognized as the cleanest in Latin America. A survey by the Mexican paper Reforma ranked it among the top three in the nation for quality of life. Nissan's largest Latin America assembly plant brings thousands of jobs to the community.

Hidrocálido, as both the city and state are often called, hosts the annual San Marcos fair in late April. Bullfighting is of great historical importance to the region and is a feature of the three week event, as is "poll swinging." Members of a local indigenous community dangle upside down, suspended by one foot while they revolve around the poll and are slowly lowered to the ground.
