Retired Canadian police officer murdered in Riviera Maya

Victim was former RCMP officer, Mexican press reports

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo-
The body of a 60 year old Canadian woman was found inside her home in this Riviera Maya beach town yesterday morning (May 22). Authorities said she was murdered.

Lynn Rachel Earle had been stabbed four times in the chest and once in the neck, according to preliminary reports. Her remains were discovered 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after a property manager where Earle lived, also a Canadian, contacted the police. Earle had been dead for several days or more.

A Quintana Roo news service reported that Earle retired from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police several years ago and moved to Playa del Carmen. Her hometown was not identified.

Police said the apparent motive was robbery. No one has been arrested and there are no suspects.

  1. I wonder if she was a Mountie? Killing a retired cop - should see the rest of the north american expat community leave after this one.

    1. Lynn Rachel Eavle is not the only one murdered. Each day if you go on line to www.poresto.net you will see nearly every other day people being murdered . When logging on to www.poresto.net on weekends you will see more murders. It's nothing new down here. People are being murdered every day. What is happening is Poor people from Tabasco, Oaxaca, Acapulco and Veracruz are hearing that there are a lot of rich people, ex pats, living in Riviera Maya ,cancun and play del carmen, so they migrate to these popular destinations in order to rob the rich so that they can survive. The Mexican government does not provide welfare. I have lived here for more than 10 years and its getting worse. \I will leave soon to retire in Miami or Lauderdale Florida.

    2. You may be a new reader of MGR. If not, you already know that the newspaper you cite, Por Esto, is regularly relied upon by MGR as an important Quintana Roo news source. Hundreds of MGR reports have been based upon stories which first appeared in Spanish on the pages of Por Esto. Most of those stories are never reported in English by the mainstream press. Indeed, that's one of MGR' purposes - to advise English readers of things they otherwise would not know, or would learn about only long after the fact.

Apart from that, I take very strong issue with your claim that "poor people from Tabasco, Oaxaca, Acapulco and Veracruz" are preying upon "rich expats" along the Riviera Maya coast. You are simply wrong, and your statement reveals a great deal of ethnic prejudice as well, in my opinion.

Since Sept. 2011, I have covered almost every crime of significance committed against foreigners in Quintana Roo, including rape, sexual assault and homicide. There have been only a very small number of such events, I am happy to report. I scan the Spanish press daily, including multiple websites. I would know if your allegations were true, and they are not.

Quintana Roo is a very dangerous place these days, as dozens of stories on this site have demonstrated. But the fact of the matter is that the victims overwhelmingly are Mexican, overwhelmingly are poor and overwhelmingly are marginalized members of society. They are not rich expats or tourists. Mexicans DO NOT migrate to "these popular destinations to rob the rich so that they can survive."

It's probably time for you to return to the Florida Gold Coast, I agree.

  3. Fortunately for Anonymous, there are several daily flights from Cancun to the (dangerous) city of Miami and he/she can be there in time for breakfast tomorrow.

    1. Thank you for that note. Her name appeared as Eavle in the Spanish press accounts; hence the error in this story, which is now corrected.
