A 38 year old Canadian citizen is facing a charge of vehicular manslaughter in a Jalisco district criminal court after a Dec. 24 accident which left one man dead, a local press source reports.
Ryan Daniel Kewicz, originally of Maple Ridge, in British Columbia, was driving a vehicle which collided with one operated by a 33 year old Mexican man, who died at the scene. The fatal crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. on the highway between Guadalajara and Ajijic, located on the shores of Lake Chapala. The town is less than an hour drive from this capital. It has many foreign residents.
Kewicz' local address was given as Fraccionamiento Agua Escondida, in Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos. Reports did not state his occupation, or how long he has resided in Mexico.
Prosecutors say that Kewicz tested positive for methamphetamine consumption. A district magistrate has committed him to jail without bond, due to the seriousness of the offense. Kewicz will be tried at a later date, but the magistrate found probable cause to believe that a criminal offense occurred.
Last year was not a particularly good one for two other Canadians in Mexico, one of whom was accused of a similar crime in February when his van slammed into a taxi in Yucatán, killing three young men. Lab tests allegedly revealed traces of marijuana in his body, but Mérida prosecutors released him after he agreed to pay a modest fine to the victims' families. Those stories are below.
