Mexican prosecutors announce arrests in Acapulco rapes

Suspects have allegedly confessed

*Updated Feb. 14*
Guadalajara -
The Attorney General of Mexico, Jesús Murillo Karam, this afternoon announced the arrests of six men in connection with last week's rape of six Spanish tourists. Spanish tourists raped, robbed on Acapulco beach front.

In a joint press conference with the governor of Guerrero state, Ángel Aguirre, Murillo said that five were arrested last Wednesday, and one yesterday. A seventh suspect is still being sought, he said.

He noted that the arrests came after a "serious investigation," and said authorities were confident they have the right men. Governor Aguirre added that the government had "no interest in charging innocent persons." The suspects have "fully confessed," according to Murillo.

They range in age from 16 to 30. The men will make their first appearance before the Public Ministry later this week.

The Attorney General added that in the past month, more than 40 other people have been arrested in unrelated cases of kidnapping and rape in Guerrero.

"We hope to erase this bitter chapter from our history," said Aguirre. "I want to extend my thanks to president Peña Nieto, who at every moment showed his complete support for our efforts." (Acapulco's tearful mayor begs Peña Nieto for federal help).

Feb. 14 - The arrested men were carrying, among other things, cell phones stolen from the Spanish tourists, prompting Attorney General Murillo to describe the case as "solved." The seventh suspect has not yet been captured. Authorities acknowledge that the men have no connection to others who have been detained in recent days, including a group picked up on Jan. 24 who remain in custody in Mexico City. It's unclear what their legal status will now be. Do authorities have right men in custody?

According to reports filed today, the men belonged to a group which pulled off robberies, extortion and kidnappings in Acapulco, occasionally selling drugs on the street as well. On the day they attacked the tourists, all said they were drunk or high on drugs. They admitted staying in the beach house from 2:00 to 5:00 a.m., while they repeatedly assaulted the women.
