Narco terrorists launch grenade attack against capitol building in border state of Tamaulipas

Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas -
A heavily armed commando squad lobbed two grenades against the Government Palace here last night.

The brazen 6:30 p.m. assault left at least three persons injured and heavily damage several vehicles. There were no immediate reports of deaths.

Tamaulipas adjoins Texas. Its capital, Ciudad Victoria, is a metro area of 325,000, 300 kilometers (185 miles) south of the Matamoros-Brownsville border crossing.

The state, and particularly the capital, have been the scene of frequent organized crime violence in recent months. On several occasions last summer mutilated bodies were abandoned in vehicles parked in front of public buildings. 14 corpses left at a Tamaulipas city hall. Authorities attributed the massacres to continuing rivalry between regional drug cartels struggling for control of lucrative north bound drug routes. The Los Zetas and the Cártel del Golfo are the primary operators in Tamaulipas.

On Mar. 31, the State Dept. advised Americans to exercise extreme caution throughout the region. U.S. Consulate in Matamoros, Tamaulipas issues Emergency Warning for Americans.

Witnesses reported that the grenades were tossed from a vehicle as it passed by the palace. They could not determine how many people were aboard.

An almost identical attack occurred on Dec. 5.

Tamaulipas remains under tight security today.
