Work of the Matazetas, authorities say
Zapopan County, Jalisco -
Technicians and forensic pathologists continue to work today at a mass burial site in this suburban county outside Guadalajara, where 17 bodies have been discovered since the beginning of the week. Authorities say all were most probably victims of the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), better known here as Los Matazetas (the Zeta killers).
The narco cemetery is near San Francisco Tesistán, a town which sits at about 5,000 feet in rugged hills northwest of the Guadalajara metro. A three person Matazeta cell which controlled drug sales in and around Tesistán was arrested late last week in a local murder case, and members revealed the location of the grave. They told police at least 25 persons were buried at the site.
The remains uncovered so far were wrapped in blankets, and all were badly decomposed.
CJNG is the dominant drug cartel in Jalisco, and is locked in a continuous violent struggle with its main competitor, Los Caballeros Templarios, in neighboring Michoacán. Last month another mass grave site was discovered in the community of La Barca, near Lake Chapala, less than 90 minutes southeast of Guadalajara. Several dozen dismembered and badly decomposed bodies were recovered from that location until authorities terminated excavations last week. Some victims may have been buried years ago. The Matazetas are also a prime suspect in that case. Mass grave held 67 remains.
In the last month more than 80 bodies have been removed from so-called narcofosas in Guadalajara exurbs, further confirming a June 2012 warning by U.S. security analyst Southern Pulse that Jalisco state would soon become a new epicenter in Mexico's 84 month old drug war.
