Prosecutor's promise not consistent with state's recent track record

Oct. 15, 2012 - Puerto Vallarta police chief Roberto Rodríguez Preciado and his escorts are attacked by a machine gun and grenade squad in Old Town, blocks from the boardwalk. After 16 months, there have been no arrests, no prosecutions and no convictions. Case closed. Puerto Vallarta: tensions linger after brazen narco attack.

Mar. 31, 2013 - Relaxing on Easter Sunday evening, Jeff Lydell Comer, 45, is killed in one of two Guadalajara bar attacks which left eight persons dead and many injured. No one has been held legally accountable for Comer's murder. Case closed, for all practical purposes.

Aug. 16, 2013 - U.S. national John Dickmeyer, 65, is robbed and murdered in his Puerto Vallarta home, and his housekeeper is bound and gagged. After six months, there have been no arrests, no prosecutions and no convictions. Case closed. "No clues" a common response with Vallarta P.D.

Oct. 17, 2013 - Two Guadalajara brothers, both attorneys, are executed by a machine gun hit squad in Vallarta's Zona Rosa. The same week Jalisco governor Aristóteles Sandoval urges "patience" in the fight against organized crime. After four months, there have been no arrests, no prosecutions and no convictions. Case closed. Narco execution in Puerto Vallarta tourist zone claims two brothers.

"Very unfortunate that some of our police have taken up with criminals," the governor acknowledged

Feb. 9, 2014 - Canadians Edward Kular, 84, and Nina Discombe, 72, are viciously beaten and stabbed to death at their winter lodging in Ajijic, on Lake Chapala. A German couple met a similar violent end in Chapala on July 20, 2012. How will Jaliscan law enforcement handle the latest case?

The Jalisco state prosecutor is quoted today in local and national news sources, as follows: "We will be making arrests in this case very soon." Many expats will be watching to see if he delivers on that bold promise.
