Major drug bust of Los Zetas - in Chicago

The U.S. attorney for Illinois has announced the arrest of 20 men on federal narcotics charges, 12 of them in Chicago, including five members of the Mexican drug cartel Los Zetas. The local men, who were arrested in a city-wide raid yesterday (Nov. 15), are alleged to have transported large quantities of cocaine from Mexico to Chicago and its environs, returning with huge amounts of cash. Other members of the conspiracy were arrested in Laredo, Texas.

The charges were filed after an investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Preliminary reports say that 250 kilograms (about 550 lbs.) of cocaine and $12.5 million in cash were recovered from joint operations conducted by DEA and FBI agents in Chicago and Texas.

An indictment filed in federal court in Chicago alleges that Eduardo Trevino worked for the Los Zetas cartel and supervised the drug sales and movement of cash from Chicago to the border city of Laredo, from where it was forwarded to destinations in Mexico. I-35 was a route used by the traffickers, according to authorities. The cash was driven across the border after being hidden in vehicles. Trevino, listed in court documents as a resident of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, has not yet been arrested.

The five Mexicans arrested in Chicago were between 38 and 49 years old. All lived in suburbs of the city.

The U.S. attorney for the northern district of Illinois, Patrick Fitzgerald, said in a press release that this is the first case in which known Los Zetas members have been arrested and charged in Chicago. The quantity of drugs and money seized "represents a severe blow to the organization," said Fitzgerald.
