Canadians found dead on Progreso beach after drowning

Mérida and Yucatán state news

Mérida,Yucatán -- Progreso municipal police report that two bodies were found just feet from the city's malecon, or boardwalk, about 9:00 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 3). The bodies were discovered by people strolling the beach, about 100 meters apart.

The victims were identified late Sunday evening as James C. Reimi and his companion, "Jane," both of Alberta, Canada. Reports say the male victim was 72 and the female 55. Reimi was identified by personal documents in a wallet found at the scene. "Jane" carried no identification, but several Canadian residents in the area recognized her from previous contacts. It is impossible to determine from the sketchy local press accounts whether the two were husband and wife. Authorities referred to them only as a "couple" who had arrived in Progreso to spend the winter. It is unknown how "Jane's" age was determined.

The medical examiner has confirmed drowning as the cause of death for both. Witnesses say "Jane" entered the water first, struggled in the rough surf and called for help. Reimi ran to assist her, and drowned while attempting a rescue.

Progreso is a beach town and cruise ship port of call about 20 miles north of Mérida. It is particularly popular with Canadians, many of whom maintain permanent or winter homes in the town or its local environs.

The Yucatan Times of Mérida contributed to the information in this report.
