Diaz may have spoken those words, or may have not, but many in this still heavily Roman Catholic nation will undoubtedly share the sentiment as they head to evening Masses.

According to many online sources, the actual phrase (that he might have said) was as follows:
ReplyDeleteDíaz is usually credited with the saying, "¡Pobre México! ¡Tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de los Estados Unidos!" (Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States!), although there is little evidence that Diaz made this remark. Seems quite apt, since many of the present day security issues in Mexico stem from our proximity to the US (i.e. its hunger for products which pass through Mexican territory)...
