Canadian tourists, 60 and 65, injured in Acapulco assault

Crimes against foreigners continue

*Updated Mar. 6*
Guadalajara -
A Canadian couple on vacation in Acapulco was robbed and assaulted last night in the famous resort city's Zona Dorado.

They had just left a restaurant called El Zorrito when three young men approached them. The motive was robbery.

The 60 year old female victim sustained a stab wound to the left leg, according to a press account. Her husband, said to be about 65, suffered a similar injury to his head. Both were transported to a hospital by emergency personnel.

The couple, who have not been identified by name or hometown, are reported in stable condition today.

Their personal belongings were taken by the assailants during the attack, police said.

Acapulco has been the scene of multiple violent acts against foreign tourists in recent weeks, including the rapes of seven Spanish women on Feb. 4 and the murder of a Belgian businessman on Feb. 23. Last month the international press called Acapulco "a death zone". A Mexican association reported that the city is the second most dangerous in the world.

Mar. 6 - Although there are many reports in the Mexican press today concerning this latest case of violence against foreign tourists, they are virtual carbon copies. None identify the Canadian victims or update their physical status. One account said that the scene of the assault was within 200 meters of a Federal Police post. It's obvious that the 18 month old Operation Guerrero is having little impact on determined criminals, who seem to act with increasing bravado regardless of location or time of day. If local authorities can't get the main tourist streets under control the economic impact on long suffering Acapulco could be devastating.
