Cancún woes: city manager and Google sign $90K contract to promote tourism; and another U.S. coed alleges bar rape, but refuses to swear out complaint

*Updated Mar. 17*
Cancún, Quintana Roo -
The city of Cancún, whose public image has been adversely affected by daily drug war violence and worrisome security reports by respected U.S. consultants, has just signed a six month, $90,000 contract with search engine giant Google.

Under the agreement, which will go into force Jun. 1, Google promised to promote the city and its now somewhat tarnished reputation for the sum of $15,000 per month. According to the contract, which was announced this week by Jesús Almaguer Salazar, head of the Cancún Visitors' and Convention Bureau, those searching for sunny resorts will find that the city's name regularly appears at the top of results. Whether that will be a significant change from what happens now is anybody's guess, but the CVCB seemed to think so. Almaguer said that if the contract produces clear results, the city will likely extend it for at least another six months.

Google's world famous search engine, which constantly crawls the web digesting new material and returns results using complex mathematical formulas, is said to process over one billion requests every 24 hours. Google was reportedly the internet's most visited website in 2012.

In the meantime, local authorities reported more trouble in Margaritaville yesterday. In a case rather mirroring this one reported by MGR in August, a 23 year old Pittsburgh native was partying in a hotel zone discotheque during the wee hours of Friday morning. When she entered the women's restroom, "some men she had just met" at the establishment - so a local press source reported in Spanish - followed her in, where one of them allegedly raped her.

The young woman, who was staying at the Westin Lagunamar on touristy Kukulcán Boulevard, was purportedly examined at a hospital, which in turn made a call on her behalf to local authorities. Police arrived and took the woman to the office of the Special Prosecutor for Sex Crimes, where she related the events. Authorities prepared a formal complaint with all all the details she provided, and asked for her to sign it. The woman refused to do so, without explanation, and left the office. Officials said they will investigate the case nonetheless, even without her cooperation.

Perhaps the woman's allegations were true. Perhaps it was another case of MAR. Rape, or a very severe case of Morning After Remorse?

Mar. 17 - These nice gentlemen also found trouble in Cancún last night. The four, all of whom are spring breakers carrying United Kingdom passports, allegedly engaged in some fisticuffs at a tourist zone watering hole called Bar XX. In this photo they're on their way to an initial court appearance. They may have been surprised to find no white wigged judge in the magistrate's chamber. There's trouble to suit every visitor's taste here. But what happens in Cancún doesn't always stay in Cancún.
