Cancún easily # 1 choice of U.S. travelers

Orbitz Worldwide, the Chicago-based internet travel agency, has reported that Cancún on Mexico's Riviera Playa (Quintana Roo state) was the premier travel destination of U.S. citizens in 2011. The Cancún Visitors and Convention Office announced that the city has once again captured the award for America's Top Travel Destination, beating out London, Paris and San Juan, Puerto Rico, all highly popular with U.S. tourists.

Other destinations favored by Americans last year were Mexico City, Guadalajara, Toronto and Rome. Orbitz based its rankings on reservations made online between January 1 and December 31, 2011.

The Top Travel Destination was not the only recognition which Cancún received. For the fifth consecutive year a professional trade group of travel agents and agencies reported that Cancún travel packages were first place in sales to Mexico-bound U.S. travelers.

Other Riviera Maya resorts in Quintana Roo state received similar good news last week, reported here. As I noted in that post, business is booming on Mexico's Caribbean coast, despite incipient narco violence generated by Los Zetas and others.
