López Obrador hits personal best in polls

The latest survey, taken May 22-24, will boost the spirits of PRD candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, especially since 21% of the 1,152 respondents interviewed said they are still undecided. The election is just 37 days away.

López Obrador maintains that all the major polls are far off the mark, because often those surveyed are not a representative sample of Mexican voters. He claims he's much closer to Peña Nieto than the media has acknowledged. AMLO lost to president Felipe Calderón in 2006 by 0.58%, the closest presidential race in the country's history. What remains to be seen is whether the press-labeled "leftist" can deliver an encore performance in 2012.

Query: How many PAN defectors might switch sides on election day? I suspect that AMLO supporters will be loyal to the bitter end. Josefina Vázquez Mota's supporters, on the other hand, might jump ship if they think López Obrador is their only hope to stop PRI. It's a very curious thing about Enrique Peña Nieto. Although he's been in easy first place throughout the campaign, he still evokes the most opposition among voters from all backgrounds. And PRI fights a daily battle responding to charges of corruption and political authoritarianism. Referring to the latter and acknowledging PRI's checked history, EPN today called for his party to "break from the past."
