Matazeta arrested in 2008 case of 12 men decapitated in Mérida, Yucatán

Another big victory for Peña Nieto administration: high ranking "Zeta killer" arrested in Guadalajara

Guadalajara -
The Mexican Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) burst onto the scene about two years ago, when it posted a YouTube video which went viral in this country (below). With an announced purpose of cleansing communities of the scourge of Los Zetas and other organized crime groups, CJNG quickly became known by its street name - Los Matazetas, or the "Zeta killers." In reality, it's just one more cartel fighting for a share of drug trafficking, extortion and kidnapping markets.

Los Matazetas, although technically based in Jalisco state, operate on both coasts of Mexico. In the past year they have been very active along the Riviera Maya, in Quintana Roo. MGR has published many stories on CJNG, some of which are below. Others can be found by using the search engine with a request for Los Matazetas, or Jalisco Nueva Generación.

Today Mexico's attorney general, Jesús Murillo Karam, announced that a key Matazeta boss was taken into custody more than a week ago, on July 10. Víctor Hugo Delgado Rentería, a/k/a "The Tornado," was arrested in Zapopan, a sprawling suburban area just beyond Guadalajara city limits, and the scene of frequent narco violence. Area police chief executed in Guadalajara Metro Zone.

Military units captured Delgado and several confederates. Karam didn't explain why the arrest was just reported today, but it was the Mexican army's second big success this month. Mexican army shines again in Treviño Morales takedown.

"Yes, he's in our custody, about to be handed over to the courts," Karam told a press conference.

Among other crimes, Delgado will be charged with the unprecedented decapitation of 12 narco tiradores (drug street vendors) in Mérida on August 29, 2008. That case, which stunned a Yucatán populace long accustomed to feeling immune from the ravages of the drug war, was the subject of this MGR report: U.S. intensely focused on Yucatán security in 2008-2009, diplomatic cables reveal.
