Operation Guerrero Seguro ("Safe Guerrero") is an intensive federal and state law enforcement action in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero, where Acapulco is located. The operation was launched three weeks ago, and officials claimed yesterday that things already are showing significant signs of improvement. The Department of Public Security said that executions have decreased 42% in the past 17 days. But apparently not everyone has been told.
In three separate incidents early this morning, 12 people were found dead in the city or surrounding communities. At about 1:30 a.m. an armed group walked into an Acapulco bar and executed five patrons, wounding a sixth. At 6:30 a.m. six bodies were found alongside of a highway in a nearby town, the apparent victims of organized crime. All had been shot. A 12th person was found dead at yet another location, shot in the head.
On Tuesday (October 25), a 19 year old woman was stopped by police in Acapulco as she exited a car carrying a box. A severed human head was inside. A search of the vehicle revealed another container, also with a head. The woman and her male companion were arrested. Police say the woman is the leader of a small group of sicarios (executioners) who perform contract killings for local drug cartels.
Footnote: by today's end, the death total in Acapulco was up to 18 -- one person every 80 minutes.
