That's the strict national average monthly pay for workers in this country of 110 million people. At the current exchange rate of about 13 pesos for each U.S. dollar, it figures out to $662 USD per month. The numbers were reported today by a Mexican agency, and are based upon 2010 incomes.
Business and corporate employees earned a national average of 48,720 pesos ($3,748 USD) per month, financial sector and insurance workers an average of 43,308 pesos ($3,331 USD) per month, and those in the media and communication an average of 29,120 pesos ($2,240 USD) per month. Those numbers represent gross, pretax incomes.
Clouding today's published report is the lack of any meaningful details concerning the obviously much higher professional level incomes. I'm going to presume that most people who earned the "average" salaries mentioned in the paragraph just above were senior executives, or worked at a management level. I doubt very much that those incomes represent the average person answering a phone, or working at a computer in a cubicle.
Farming and fishing jobs paid the least in Mexico, an average of a mere 780 pesos ($60 USD) per month. Service sector jobs such as hotel and restaurant work, as well as construction jobs, paid an average of 3,000-5,000 pesos ($231-$385 USD) per month.
Finally, across all agencies and departments, an average Mexican government employee earned 23,560 pesos ($1,812 USD) per month last year.
In 2010, there were approximately 46 million workers in Mexico, says the government.
