Guatemalan uses Facebook profile to kidnap, murder two teenage girls
Guatemala's National Civil Police have announced the arrest of Eduardo Chen García, 23, on charges of kidnapping, conspiracy and murder. A judicial warrant was issued for García on September 28, and he was located in a suburban neighborhood of Guatemala City earlier this week.
Authorities say García created a false Facebook profile and contacted two young women, 16 and 18, convincing them that they had friends in common. On August 26 they agreed to meet him. García lured or took the women to a town about 15 miles south of the capital, where they were later found murdered. In the interim García contacted the girls' families and demanded $64,000 USD for their release. Police say they were already dead.
After a preliminary hearing yesterday, a judge ruled that there is sufficient evidence to hold García for further proceedings. Another hearing is scheduled for January 2012.
The girls' bodies were found buried in a remote area. Although a cause of death has not yet been established, investigators said yesterday that a shotgun and adhesive tape were found at the scene. Another man is also being sought in connection with the case.
