Calderon: Mexican military respects human rights
Appearing today with the heads of Mexico's most prestigious university to discuss national security matters, President Calderon promised that in the war against organized crime, human rights and democratic principles will be fully respected. "No part of our strategy will ever be premised on the notion that human rights may have to be sacrificed," he said. Referring to the August 25 casino attack which left 52 dead, Calderon noted that "What people are demanding today is that we apply more pubic force (against organized crime), and that's what we've done in Monterrey." But he added, "Never before in the history of our country has there been such a legal emphasis on human rights as there is today."
