Rampant street crime in Venezuela

Battling cancer is not Hugo Chavez' only problem these days. More than 500 murders were recorded in August, and the president has acknowledged that street crime is a serious problem. Unemployment and widespread poverty are the standard reasons given by government officials. Of late Chavez has spent far more time pining over his beleaguered friend Muammar Gaddafi in Libya than announcing plans for how he's gong to deal with robberies and homicides in Caracas. But experts say it's unlikely that Venezuelans will hold domestic crime against him in 2012, when Chavez promises to run for reelection despite his current health challenges.

Dec. 31, 2012- Venezuela faces huge homicide rate, 80% committed by firearms, as its president hangs by a thread in Havana
