New attack against mayor in Quintana Roo

Mayor of Solidaridad in Playa del Carmen narrowly escapes gunmen

It's happened again. For the second time in five days, there has been a direct attack against a public official in Quintana Roo state, home to famous resorts like Cancún , Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. The attack by armed gunman occurred last night (Sept. 13) at about 9:45 p.m., on the main, heavily traveled highway between Cancún International Airport and the city proper. The target -- a mayor from a small neighboring community who had left Playa earlier in the evening and was just entering Cancun -- survived the attack uninjured. Fortunately he was accompanied by five military escorts in a separate vehicle, who returned the fire against the hit team. This was undoubtedly the work of the feared Los Zetas (the Z's), Mexico's ruthless drug cartel and execution squad all rolled into one.
