The presidents of Venezuela and Bolivia are traveling together today to Cuba. Hugo Chávez will have his fourth -- and perhaps final -- chemotherapy treatment over the weekend. Evo Morales is making an official two day visit to the island nation where he will receive an honorary degree in political science from the University of Havana. Afterwards Morales will travel on to New York to attend the opening of the United Nations. Chávez said he will not attend the U.N. session this year due to his health, but he is optimistic that his battle with an undisclosed form of cancer is almost over.
"The most likely thing is that this fourth treatment will be my last, so we can turn the page and say goodbye to the threat of cancer, and get on with living and preparing for the long road ahead," said the 57 year old Chávez. He was referring to next year's presidential election in Venezuela, in which he has promised to run and campaign aggressively.
The two leaders are close friends and political allies, and with their Cuban counterparts as well. Chávez and Morales are both outspoken critics of U.S. policy towards Latin America.
